The PEP725 dataset
The project currently offers around 16 million plant phenological observations from many countries in Europe. Individual observations date back to the late 18th century, while measurement networks can be traced back to around 1950. However, it should also be noted that the density of observations across Europe is very unevenly distributed. The German Weather Service’s measurement network accounts for the largest share of the database with 14 million observations, followed by Austria, Sweden and Switzerland.
Obtaining data
The PEP725 dataset was created with the aim of providing a central point of contact for European plant phenological observation data.
PEP725 does not carry out its own observations, but relies on the support of its partner organisations. The project brings together the various observation networks and makes them available in a uniform format for science, education and research.
Due to the redesign of our homepage, we are currently unable to offer direct data downloads.
Work on a modern API has already begun, but until it is completed, data sets can only be requested by email.
Sample Dataset
To enable you to quickly get started working with this observational data, we have compiled a sample data set.
The area from which the sample data originates is marked in red (12.0E – 13.5E / 47.5N – 48.5N).
The sample contains all observation data from 2014 to 2017 for an area between Germany and Austria (12.0E – 13.5E / 47.5N – 48.5N) as highlighted on the map. The zip archive provided contains a data file (csv) and a description of the file format, terms of use and other important information on how to use it.
All observations shared in the example are subject to the CC BY-4.0 licence. This means that you are free to use the data as long as you cite our reference publication correctly (see Readme.txt in the archive). In total, the zip archive contains about 8400 observations.

Request data by email
To enable us to send you the required data as quickly as possible, please describe your requirements as precisely as possible.
- You have read our terms of use and agree to them (PEP725_Data_Use_Policy)
- Please let us know whether you need the data for research and teaching purposes or whether you plan to use it commercially.
- What time period is required? Restrictions regarding plant species, phenological phase and/or spatial boundaries.
Please send your enquiry to PEP725 Management
We endeavour to respond to all enquiries promptly, but we cannot rule out delays, especially during holiday periods or conferences.
More information about the dataset
At this point, we’d like to gather more detailed information. We don’t have much to offer at the moment, but if there’s something specific you’re looking for, please let us know.
